Republic Day & I

Happy Republic Day!

What does this day mean to you?

It fills me up with a sense of nostalgia as I remember all the times I have woken up and run to the TV to watch the Parade on DD. I often missed the beginning as I was a very late riser as a child. To this day I never skip watching the parade.

The day strengthens my sense of national pride and patriotism. My heart fills with joy as I stand for the national anthem & I am happy to note that everyone around me does the same.

I believe that a sense of pride for your nation is a sense of pride in yourself.

As a wise person once said

We are the sum total of our experiences. Those experiences – be they positive or negative – make us the person we are, at any given point in our lives. And, like a flowing river, those same experiences, and those yet to come, continue to influence and reshape the person we are, and the person we become. None of us are the same as we were yesterday, nor will be tomorrow.”

~ BJ Neblett

The experiences that shaped our thoughts, values, attitudes & actions, we owe largely to our family, our school & our community. Not all experiences are positive but they always teach us something. We love our families and would stand up for them against all odds. Most of us remember our school years fondly and have a sense of pride in our alma mater. It even acts as a common thread that connects us with others who might have studied in the same institution at albeit at a different time than us.

But how many of us feel the same way about our nation? How many of us feel a sense of pride in being Indian or are willing to stand up for our country against slander and defamation.

Taking pride in our roots is about self-respect. If you do not respect where you come from, you cannot fully respect your existence.

As children we were often chided for being respectful to our elders, not talking back to our teachers, etc. We were also taught to respect our nation and be good, responsible citizens. To me, this day each year serves as a reminder of my duties & responsibilities as a proud citizen of this grand country.

Someone sent me this whatsapp message today.

सुधारेंगे खुद को तो

सुधरेगा तंत्र ,

देश में बदलाव का

बस यही है मंत्र.

Translated to English this 4 line poem means

"Only when we work on bettering ourselves will we be able to improve our nation. This is the only formula to bring about change in the country"

A simple note with a powerful message.

So let us today pledge to be the best versions of ourselves so that our wonderful nation can continue on its journey toward greatness

🇮🇳 आप सभी को 73 वें गणतंत्र दिवस के अवसर पर हार्दिक बधाई एवम अनंत शुभकामनाएं 🇮🇳

Wishing you all a very happy 73rd Republic Day

XOXO
