DIY Series: Salon at Home Part 1

I know eyebrows 'au naturale' are a trend world over but I realised that not too many women love their bushy eyebrows. Friends and clients have been complaining about missing their fortnightly threading appointment.

This one's for the ladies who are missing their salon during this lockdown.

How to DIY your eyebrows

You will need

  • A cold spoon - Yes, that's right! Before you read any further, go stick a spoon in the freezer

  • A pair of tweezers - If you haven't used yours in a while, I suggest you clean it properly with a disinfectant solution

  • Eyebrow scissors - They are tiny and have a rounded end so you don't hurt yourself

  • A handheld (magnifying) mirror

  • A pencil or a thin brush (or a chopstick) - anything thats long and straight

FIRST TIP

Well Groomed Eyebrows

Don't wait for 2 weeks like you do with your salon appointment. Check for stray hairs every 2-3 days and take care of them. Let me tell you why... tweezing individual hairs needs patience & can be quite painful so you might give up after the first 10-15 hairs. So do it often and you won't feel the pain. Also, the shape is easier to maintain if you tweeze often, specially if your brows tend to get bushier and you don't like them that way.

CHECK THE SHAPE

How to check eyebrow shape
Check your eyebrow shape
  • Place the pencil (or brush) at the edge of your nose & hold it straight up to meet your eyebrow. The eyebrow should begin at this point.

  • Next, angle the pencil so that it passes through the centre of the eyeball (while looking absolutely straight) and meets your eyebrow. This is where your arch should be.

  • Finally, angle the pencil so it touches the outer corner of the eye and goes up to meet your eyebrow. This is where your eyebrow should end

Please know, it's ok if both your eyebrows aren't exactly the same. Think of them as real sisters rather than twins. Now that you know your ideal shape, it is time to pluck

THE PROCESS

Know how to pluck your eyebrows
  • First, take the spoon from the freezer and hold it to your eyebrow so that the cold can numb the area a bit.

  • Now, carefully tweeze only the strays and start from the first line.

  • Use the magnifying mirror close to your face so you can get a clear view.

  • Make sure you grab the hair close to the root (without pinching your skin) and pull in the direction of the growth. This way you will get it clean off without any breakage.

  • First do the bottom and then do the top of your eyebrow.

  • Don't get enthusiastic & over-pluck... A couple of hairs off can make a big impact.

  • Brush up the inner corner of your eyebrow & trim the hairs with the small scissors to get an even line (this step you could totally skip if you want to)

  • Now repeat with the other brow

In the end, don't forget to apply some ice, rosewater or calamine lotion to your eyebrows to calm any irritation

And that is pretty much it. Done correctly, it should take you all of 10 minutes the first time and will get easier & faster each time. You might even start skipping the salon visit altogether by the time this lockdown is over.
